Do You Know the Difference Between Your Client’s Persona and Personality?

To be an effective coach, it is critical that you understand the difference between your client’s “Persona” and “Personality”`.  While at first blush these two terms may seem interchangeable, there are significant differences between the two!  And your ability to coach your clients depends in large measure on how each affects and influences the other!

Let me try and explain the distinctions I use to differentiate between “Persona” and “Personality”.

To find the origins of the term “Persona”, we need to go back to the classic Greek theater of 500 BC where actors and performers relied heavily on their “Persona” to define and develop their characters on stage.  “Persona” is the Latin word for “mask” and the ancient Greek performers deployed their personae to convey to the audience their emotions and character traits.  The Greek theater mask was therefore the transformational link between the actor and his character or “stage persona”.  The “Persona” even defined the stage gender of the actor, since all actors were male.

Your “Persona” will change, adjust or conform to any situation that affects you at any given moment.   For example, when I’m interacting with my teenage sons I will use a different persona from the one that is more compatible with my partner.  My “business persona” is in stark contrast to the “entertainer persona” that defines me when I’m on stage.  And my “creative persona” bails me out when my “analytical persona” gets me into trouble with my peers or critics.  I’m either perceived as a teacher, writer, entertainer, businessman, father, spouse or lover depending on the circumstance of time and place.

Our “persona” is shaped by the characteristics that we have consciously or subconsciously developed, adopted, created or copied through learned behavior, education and training.  Our persona is substantially supported by a skill set that we have honed to perfection and that we project onto others.  Our “persona” is therefore defined by others based on their perceptions of us.

Our “personality” on the other is shaped by the character traits we were born with; our “gifts & talents”.  Our “personality” is the driving force that motivates us to do great things. It gives us the ability to combat and defend ourselves against attacks on our persona and it immunizes us against “negative emotional viruses” that will undermine our imminent success at anything we do.

Our “personality” will remain relatively consistent, because personality traits are largely inherent. They will manifest themselves no matter what “persona” we project onto others. Our “personality” keeps us genuine and unique, regardless of the “persona” we create for ourselves!  We cannot force our heart to stop beating or our lungs to stop breathing and we cannot subdue our inherent personality trait for any length of time.   Without the mix of our inherent personality traits, our “persona” would simply become a carbon copy of someone else. Our “personality” gives our “persona” that uniqueness that makes us different from anyone else.

Your "Persona" is what people see! Your "Personality" is how people experience you.

Your "Persona" is your EXTERNAL IDENTITY. It is how others will characterize and identify you, based on their perception of "who you are". But your "Persona" is a mask and you can change that mask at will! For example, you can change your "Persona" to be more dominant in situations where leadership is required, such as in your career or business. Or you can adapt a "Persona" that is more aligned with your spouse or children. In fact, you will create or adapt a "Persona" for all types of different situations and you will do so without consciously thinking about it UNLESS you you want to harness the power of a "Persona" in order to achieve a specific objective. By using the right techniques, you can create such a "Persona" and internalize it so it becomes a part of you. Successful leaders do this all the time!

The bottom line is that we all have "Personae" that we hide behind and these "Personae" become our PERCEIVED IDENTITY in the eyes of those with whom we come into contact! Our "Personae" are usually created with the best of intentions, for we all want to be seen in the best possible light. They are intended to create the best "perception" about who we are in any given circumstance! As a business leader, a politician, a parent, a romantic partner, a person of faith or a coach!

But no matter how well we intend to have our "Persona" represent "who we are", it will always be a PERCEIVED IDENTITY. And because our "Persona" is created in the image we wish to be portrayed (consciously or subconsciously), it becomes an IDENTITY OF OUR EGO. There is nothing wrong with that. A healthy ego is an integral part of "who we are" and "why we are"! But it's NOT OUR TRUE IDENTITY!

Our TRUE IDENTITY is a "Spiritual Identity". It is an identity that others may experience when they meet us, but cannot see.  It is the identity that we were born with. It is inherent in all of us. And it manifests itself through our "PERSONALITY" which is the aggregate of all our inherent characteristics and talents. Our "PERSONALITY" is the moral compass that guides our "Persona" as it becomes our representative to the outside world. It preserve the integrity of our "Persona". And it adds a dimension to our "Persona" that makes it uniquely ours.

Occasionally, our “persona” is in conflict with our “personality”.  When this happens, we will experience stress and anxiety.  IF our "PERSONA" is not aligned with our "PERSONALITY" (or our TRUE IDENTITY), the "Persona" we created will be in conflict with the "Personality" we inherited. When this happens, we experience anxiety and stress, for our "Persona" no longer represents the way in which we want to be perceived. For example, if we "pretend" to be someone other than who we inherently are (based on our personality) and if we create a FALSE IDENTITY based on a "Persona" that tries to create the perception that we are someone else, our "Personality" will not be able to support or sustain such a facade. This often happens when we try to create a "Persona" for a job we want, a relationship we seek or a goal we want to achieve. If these objectives are not congruent with our inherent personality traits, we are destined to fail in these endeavors!

Our “persona” allows us to achieve any Desired Outcome, while our “personality” remains true to its own unique values and characteristics.  Our “persona” is what defines us; our “personality” is what distinguishes us.

What Is Your Unique Coaching Proposition (UCP)?

No coaching business can survive without clients!

In order for your coaching practice to thrive, you need clients who are prepared to pay you EXPERT Coaching Fees!

There are many programs, articles and teleseminars on “Client Attraction” that are created or delivered by “gurus” who claim to have a unique method for generating leads and converting them into high paying clients! Their outrageous claims may create the perception of financial abundance but produce very little in the way of quality clients.

Rather than just focusing on how to get clients, coaches need to highlight some of the ways in which they can differentiate themselves in order to attract high paying clients.

I call this the “Unique Coaching Proposition” (UCP).

A “Unique Coaching Proposition” is the perception a coach must create to convince the client that his or her coaching program is different from and better than that of the competition.  Unless you can convey to your clients what makes your coaching proposition unique in a world of homogeneous and traditional coaches, you cannot target your niche market successfully.

Here is how you can identify, characterize and brand your UCP.

  1.  Identify the needs of your coaching niche based on the way THEY perceive them. Not the way YOU perceive them. While these two perceptions may seem very similar, the difference is in the approach required to create an effective coaching proposition.  Most coaches will create THEIR perception of the client's needs and impose their own vision on the Desired Outcome that the client seeks.  By approaching the solution from the client’s perspective, you will differentiate you coaching proposition from that of other coaches.

2.    Find out what drives and motivates your clients. It isn’t enough to simply coach toward a Desired Outcome as expressed by the client. You must delve much deeper into the “psychology” of the client’s inner motivations. Remove the veils that cover their greatest desires and innermost fears!

3.    Discover the real reason behind your client’s decision to work with you (as opposed to choosing any other coach). Your UCP will be the primary reason why your niche clients will choose to work with you rather than another coach. It is your distinctive coaching “brand” that differentiates you from other life or business coaches in your chosen niche market.

Once you've identified, characterized and branded your Unique Coaching Proposition, you need to take the next - and hardest - step: clearing your mind of any preconceived ideas about your coaching programs or services and being brutally honest. What features of your coaching program jump out at you as something that sets you apart from other coaches? What is the perception you can create about your coaching skills that will make clients want to hire you as a coach?

How can you position yourself as a coach EXPERT to highlight your UCP?

Don't get discouraged. A successful coaching practice is not about having to re-invent coaching; it's about making your coaching practice stand out - even in a niche market filled with other coaches.

You Can’t Coach a Dream!

In order to facilitate your client’s Desired Outcome, you should always coach with an “end in mind”.  For most clients, the “end in mind” will be the successful achievement of their Desired Outcome.

But therein lies the rub!

Many clients will be able to eloquently express their desires! They want to be fit, happy, rich, in a relationship, 30 lbs lighter, fulfilled, successful . . . . the list goes on and on!  But they may be vague on the outcome. Where do the need to go, and what will they need to do in order to turn their desire into an actual outcome?

There are three “stages” of coaching that will be present in virtually any coaching situation.  They are:

1 - Desire
2 - Vision
3 - Outcome

As a coach, it is imperative that you not only understand the subtle differences between these three stages, but that you learn to skilfully maneuver your clients from one stage to the next. This is a coaching “process” that, when properly applied, will take your clients to their Desired Outcome in a practical and purposeful manner!

STAGE 1 – DESIRE
Any desire that is not properly nurtured and left unattended will soon wither away. And while most people will start by creating a dream about what it is they wish to achieve, that dream must be converted into a vision before it dies.

By itself, a desire has no accountability! It carries no responsibility. And it offers no stability! It will be nothing more than an elusive dream and you can’t coach a dream!  The first thing you need to do as a coach is to convert a dream or desire into a genuine vision!

STAGE 2 – VISION
A Vision is a dream in 3-D. You can actually step inside your vision and start to follow it! But unlike a dream or desire, your vision requires accountability! And since accountability is tangible and can be measured, it can also be coached. As a coach, you must help your client convert a dream or desire into a vision.

A vision is a realization of what is possible. It is in fact the Desired Outcome you’re client wants to achieve! But coaching your clients to their vision can be just as challenging as taking them from the realm of a dream and converting that desire to a vision.  Especially if that vision takes them into a distant future. Any vision that will require more than 6 months to achieve, is not a coachable goal. In order to for you to be a results-driven and goal-oriented coach, you must approach your client’s vision incrementally in segments that are between 3 to 6 months in duration. Each segment will have its own objective, require its own coaching program and will create a tangible “milestone” on the path to the client’s ultimate Desired Outcome – their vision!. Each segment will therefore have its own unique outcome!

STAGE 3 – OUTCOME
So you’ve converted your client’s dream into a vision of what is possible and now you are ready to coach your client toward that Desired Outcome by always keeping the “end in mind”! And you’ve outlined this process in your Coaching Proposal, together with an estimate of the timeline to achieve the final objective. But if the Desired Outcome is more than 6 months away (according to your timeline), your Coaching Proposal must also contain a detailed description of the Coaching Program that will take your client to the next outcome, milestone or segment.  This is the segment your client must complete and the outcome that must be achieved, before moving on to the next part of the journey.

Depending on the grandeur of your client’s vision and the scope of the Desired Outcome, this will be your opportunity to create a long-term relationship with your client that will remain purposeful, results-driven, goal-oriented and lucrative for the duration of the journey!
